What’s the story behind The Storytellers name?

The Storytellers first opened in 2012, and the name reflects what great pubs are all about — people coming together, sharing stories, meeting friends and making new memories.

The name also has a connection to a piece of local Stockton folklore. The original landlord shared a story upon opening that his mum used to tell about growing up nearby on Sydney Street. Back then, wandering characters would pass through the area and were known locally as “storytellers.” They were harmless figures who would gather children around them and entertain them with tall tales and adventures.

One of the most memorable was a man known as “Tarzan,” who would tell stories to local kids while parents kindly filled his billycan with tea.

The idea of these travelling storytellers stuck, and it felt like the perfect name for a pub — a place where people still come together to share a drink, a laugh and a few good stories of their own.

We can't wait to hear the stories shared between our walls as we start The Storytellers new chapter in April 2026
